Church History
The First Baptist Church of Dunn, with Rev. E.P.
Russell as Pastor, started making plans in 1951 for
a branch Sunday school in this community. A
committee was appointed by the Church to be
responsible for the work of the Mission. The
committee was comprised of: W.E. Cobb, L.L.
Coats, L.R. Norris, Mrs. V.L. Stephens, Mrs. K.M.
Wood, and Robert Draughon. Later Mr. Joseph
Norris was added to this committee.
The first meeting of the Mission was held on
February 17, 1952 with 29 people present. Work
soon began in a small building owned by Mr. Joe
Norris located on the corner of East Cleveland
Street and North Clinton Avenue. Sunday school
meetings at the mission grew slowly but surely until
the congregation felt that a worship service should
be added. Reverend William Davenport was elected
to be the first Pastor of the new Mission. Reverend
Earl Davis Farthing was elected to become the
second Pastor. The ordinance of the Lord’s Supper
was added to the worship service in 1957. Also in
that same year, the Rev. Joseph D. Creech was
elected Pastor and pews were added to the
building. Training Union was also added to the
service in October of 1957 by Mr. Benny Wood and
Mr. L.L. Coats.
On June 8, 1958 the Mission became a self
supported organized Church and was accepted into
the Little River Baptist Association in October of
that year as the North Clinton Avenue Baptist
Church. The Rev. Joseph D. Creech was the first
Pastor of the newly organized Church and served a
congregation of 55 charter members. The present
day sanctuary was added to the old building at a
cost of approximately $30,000 in 1961. The
Educational Building was constructed by the First
Baptist Church and was given to NCABC when it had
outgrown the old building. This new facility was
constructed by Mr. Ellis Godwin and many of the
members worked at night to help with the
construction.
The Reverend Gerald K. Riggs was elected Pastor in
1963 and two years later in 1965 an annex building
across the street was purchased to be used as
Sunday school rooms. The Rev. Alva Ellis was
elected Pastor in 1966 and a Parsonage was bought
for the Church in September of that year. The Rev.
James Madison became Pastor in 1975 and was
followed by Rev. George Magill in 1977. The
Church Library was also founded in 1977. The
present day Fellowship Hall and Classroom facilities
were constructed and dedicated in 1983. The Rev.
James Shaw was called as Pastor in 1986 and served
until 1990 when the Rev. B. Carroll Owenby became
Pastor. The Rev. Joey Harrell was called as Pastor in
March 2000 and served until August 2002. The
Rev. Paul Johnson served as Interim
Pastor from September 2002 until September 4, 2005. The Rev. Billy Stines is currently serving as Pastor.
